Super Secret Project !

Here is Boring Bob's Adventure to the C@P site !

What have I done today to be good to myself?

I had a collection of books at my house. I was done with reading the books so I brought them to the C@p site to sell. The Kingsport c@p site now has a variety of books for sale.
I had made and put up sign around the C@p site. This was good towards myself because someone else can now share the joy I had when reading the books.

Small Victories

Last week I had a one on one tutorial with a man who was looking to burn CD's. Well, to say the least we had a few problems. He did not have the software to burn CD's. After some time I thought that we had finally burned a CD. Unfortunately, this was not the case. It would work on the computer but not on his stereo. He came back in today and after a little more fiddling around we finally got a CD burnt. He called from his home to let me know that it was working on his stereo. This was certainly a high point. He now knows how to burn CDs from the comfort of his own home!

Capturing C@P

Hey Guys!

So as you were shown in orientation, this is the link to the Capturing C@P site. You should all do at least one of these! You can take the 6 questions you've been doing and put them into that.

Computer Funnies

odd but yet true tricks

If you ever get caught sleeping on the job or in school, slowly raise your head and say "In Jesus' name, amen.

Easy tick removal! They "screw" clockwise into your skin. Just grab it with tweezers and "unscrew" counterclockwise
.

Is the person in line behind you annoying? Hold down all 4 corners on the credit card machine, it takes *a while* to reset.

To tell how fresh an egg is, put it in water. If it sinks, it's fresh. If it floats to the top, throw it away.

Trying to save space? Uncooked spaghetti fits perfectly inside of a Pringles can.

Studying or working in your room? Keep your shoes on. Your mind associate having your shoes on with being busy.

Dry-erase markers work on mirrors. Leave notes in the bathroom and around the house easily!

When putting fitted sheets on a bed, do the opposite (diagonal) corners first!

Toss onions in the freezer 15 minutes before you cut them, & they won't make you tear up anymore.

Press the space bar to scroll down *really* fast. Press shift+space to scroll up that fast.

If you suspect someone's checking you out, yawn. If they yawn back, they were (yawning is visually contagious!).

Pressing F6 highlights the address bar in your browser
.

The door to your fuel tank comes with a slot to put your fuel cap into, instead of putting it on the roof/hood of the car.

Curl your toes while walking around in the dark. It'll prevent you from stubbing your toe or tripping over something
.

If someone doesn't like you, ask to borrow their pencil. It's a cool psychological trick that will make them like you more.

Having a conversation with someone & not sure if they're interested? Fold your arms. If they do the same, they probably are.

Want to show someone an exact time in a Youtube video? Right click on the video & select "copy video URL at current time."

Rubbing alcohol will remove pen marks & stains from pretty much anything.

How to check to see if you have bad breath: Lick your wrist and smell it. (Gross, but works!).

Applying lemon juice onto freckles fades them, and can even make them disappear
.

Get rid of acne and lose weight the lazy way: Don't drink soda and get enough sleep.

Accidentally erase something you just typed on your iPhone? To undo that, just shake it.

Not sure whether to unfriend someone on Facebook? If it'd be weird to wish them happy birthday on their wall, unfriend them.

Sprinkle salt on your drink napkin and it won't stick to the drink.

Mail letters for free: Put your address as the destination, and put their address as the return address.

If you're leaving your house to go on vacation for a while, keep your valuables either in your dishwasher or laundry basket
.

Put french fries in your burgers and chips in your sandwiches.

You can use your refrigerator as a giant whiteboard! Just be sure not use Sharpie.

When at Wendy's or McDonald's, ask for unsalted fries. This guarantees that they'll be fresh out of the fryer.

How I helped someone yesterday

Yesterday a girl game into the C@P site lost and looking for her friends place. She asked if she could use the phone to call her friend. I showed her Skype on my computer and let her use it to call her friend. Turns out she had past her friends house and was very happy to have been able to us Skype to call her friend.

What have I do today to be helpful?

This morning I took pictures of the library and uploaded them to the computer for my supervisor. I then emailed them for her. It was a great way to start the day!

What have I done today to make it more likely I will learn something?

Today as I was helping someone with their computer I listened to what she was having problems with. I asked her to walk me through what she normally does at home. I watched what she was doing and realized that her track pad was very sensitive. So I adjusted her track pad by taking away the click function. This made it much easier for her use! I learned that before trying to solve the problem I had to see if there was anything else contributing to the problem! Observe the problem before trying to solve it!

Have I done something positive about someone to their face?

During a one-on-one computer tutorial this afternoon I said what great improvements she had made and also how great she did with the double click!

I talked to my sister during my lunch break today as she had called me earlier in the day. However, when I called her back she had already found a solution to the problem! Her pony has to take medication and he has been eating it along with his feed but this morning he did not. So she found another way to give it him! I told her what a great job she is doing with him as she watches him closely each day to observe how he is doing and makes sure he gets all his medication.

Have you said something positive about someone, when they are not even in the room?

Last week I was telling my supervisor about the great pasta I had in Port Williams. I was explaining how great the owner and the employees were. She has gone twice and she really enjoyed it as well! So we were talking about what great food there was and about how great the owner and employees were!

Over the weekend I was telling my family how much I am enjoying my job and how my supervisors and others I work with are so much fun to work with!

What have I done today to be good to myself?

Everyday I bring a lunch but this morning I decided I would go for pasta instead! I decided it would be a nice treat! It was very good!

I also enjoy reading so over the weekend I bought a book and I finished it over the weekend! I had not really had much chance to read since last summer!

She went above and beyond the call of duty and made her C@P day excellent for anyone who walked in! I would also like to give an honorable mention to JASMINE. She also made it great and was the only person to actually say "Happy C@P day" to us when we walked in!

Congrats guys! Take a look at the photos posted in the pages section and again thanks for making this the best C@P day ever!

The Last of Challenge 2

What have I done today to make it more likely some ELSE will learn something?

I made an extra handout and spent all day working on it for my beginners class tomorrow night to learn about emails. I have been finding that the needs of beginners are all different so I made sure that I had asked what they wanted to learn to gear the session to their interests. Hopefully they will be more likely to learn something because they will be interested in it.

Have I done something positive about someone to their face?

I told one of our volunteers who comes in often throughout the week what a big help he was. I think he was happy to know that he was being helpful.

Have you said something positive about someone, when they’re note even in the room?

The other day I said to one of the Librarians how nice my boss Nick is and how funny he is. He makes working here at the C@P lab fun!

What have I done today to be good to myself?

I love reading and because I have been working on school as well as working two jobs, my personal reading time has been limited. But since I have now finished one job and am near finishing my course, I decided to order some books from amazon and treat myself. I know it’s crazy to buy books when you work at a library, but there is something about adding a book to your bookshelf that feels rewarding.

Happy C@P Day Everyone

Happy C@P day to all and to all a great weekend!!!! (>'_')> ^('_')^ <('_' <)

C@P DAY !

First of all C@P day has been fun .. we don't get A LOT of people here at the VANSDA office, but a few and they have all been really happy when they walk in and see all of the refreshments and decorations I have set up, so its been nice!
I feel like I've been slacking TERRIBLY on my 6 questions, so I'm just going to shoot off all 6 right now :)

1. What have I done today to be helpful?
Today my supervisor and I hung streamers across the ceiling of our C@P site area, she did not want to stand on a chair to tape the ends to the ceiling, so I did it for her :) .

2. What have I done today to make it more likely I will learn something?
My office door is very close to the C@P site entrance, so I CAN be seen, but today I stood outside of my office and walked around, fiddled with the food and decorations making sure everything was in order, greeted people as they came in, and served them cake. I think just making yourself more AVAILABLE opens you up to learn something new :)
3. What have I done today to make it more likely some ELSE will learn something?
Today for C@P Day I did C@P site trivia! I have prizes that I am giving out to C@P Site users. The questions were all computer related/C@P related questions.
4. Have I done something positive about someone to their face?
Today I told my supervisor that I loved her eye makeup. A bit silly? Maybe.. but she seemed to really appreciate it and seemed surprised that I'd mentioned it. It put a smile on her face, so it put one on mine!
5. Have you said something positive about someone, when they’re note even in the room?
Today after one of our C@P Site users had left I told one of my co-workers "you know, that lady is really a sweetheart". She comes in everyday looking on jobbank. I really hope she finds something soon!
6. What have I done today to be good to myself?
And last but CERTAINLY not least! Today I have been having the best day.. and still am. I really got into the C@P day spirit.. to the point where everyone here at the VANSDA office has been laughing at me. We hung up streamers, we have a big table out front full of punch, chips. candy, fruit tray, veggie tray, and balloons hanging from the ceiling! Doing all this was so fun for me. (I have also been indulging in the treats throughout the day.. so THIS is good for me :) ) !

HAPPY FRIDAY ALL AND OF COURSE HAPPY C@P DAY!!

Mini C@p Day...?

Today i came to work I usually arrive around 8:40 for work to start at 9:00.
I was starting up all the computers when this littler girl came in the building.
Today at the building where the C@p site is located was suppose to be day camp for the community members. This little girl had the date and time wrong and her parents had just dropped her off and went to work. I had called almost everyone trying to find the people in charge of the camp, but no answer. This little girl stayed with me from 8:40- 12:00. We made magnets and a bookmark and a sign for her bedroom and made origami hearts and dogs . She was very happy that she was able to do something while she was waiting for the day camp. We still don't know if the day camp is happening but she went to lunch at her grandma's and might return to see if the camp is still going on .She said she will return after she eats. This was so cute and It was like a mini c@p day. We used the computer for everything. And a laminating machine and a color printer. :)

Go c@p go!

What have I done today to make it more likely I will learn something?

Today I was trying to put together a creative way to present my C@P History information and kept getting stuck when using programs which were not giving me the results I was hoping for. Instead of giving up and changing my plan, I decided to research online and find the solution to my problem. After a couple hours of trying different techniques, I finally got it to work! Although I spent a lot of time doing it, I learned a lot of things I didn't know before!

What have I done today to make it more likely some ELSE will learn something?

Yesterday, I worked in Kentville and I had had my "ask me" sign out. I helped someone with their resume (typing and spacing) as he had moved and had new phone numbers and a new address. Then I spent the rest of the afternoon helping someone who uses his computer to read audio books update his computer! This took over an hour as we had to update the reading program twice (hopefully the updates will solve the problems he had been having) and we also updated his computer (there was 114 updates)!!

What have I done today to make it more likely some ELSE will learn something?

Today when I was not doing one-on-one computer tutorials I had my "ask me" sign. I helped a couple work on a poster (I helped them change font size and center etc.). Then I helped a lady get a picture from her emails printed and put her email contacts into a word document so she could print them. I helped the same lady throughout the afternoon with different questions. It was a great to be able to help!

What have I done today to be helpful?

Today was a great day! I had three one-on-one computer tutorials! During the first tutorial I helped a lady scan a picture so she could share it on facebook with her family (especially her grandchildren). She was so happy at how the picture turned out as the picture was very small but on facebook it appeared quite large! During the next computer tutorial we worked on how to delete emails and search google! For the last tutorial I helped a lady with several questions she had about her home computer!

Crazy!

What have I done today to be good to myself?

This may sound odd but today the printer stopped working and was acting up and my supervisor thought it was broken. All that my supervisor wanted was pictures printed on photo paper. He left a little mad that the printer sucked. I decided to change the ink cartage's, and what do you know good as new. It just takes a little knowledge and time to fix a problem.
You may ask how does this do anything to be good to yourself? Well I have always hated printers! And never know how to fix anything, but I did something good I learned something and fixed a printer. (even though it was just empty ink) :p So this was good to do for myself made me feel confident. :)

What have I done today to be good to myself?

What have I done today to be good to myself?

Today I didn't have to wake up early because last night I made sure all my things were ready for me to walk out the door. By doing this I gave myself an extra half an hour to sleep in. I really like it when I'm proactive so future me can be lazy.

What have I done today to make it more likely I will learn something?

Also while I was being proactive last night I downloaded a new version of Adobe Photoshop (CS5). I'm hoping that with this 30 day trial I may be able to learn a few new design techniques and tips that I didn't know before.

Have you said something positive about someone, when they’re not even in the room?

I don't know if this counts, but some of my good friends went home to Ottawa for the summer. When talking to another friend we both realized that we miss our friends who had left. We then started to chat about each person and reflect on the qualities they had that we missed. Shout out to my peeps in Ottawa!

When it rains...

Today I loved the rain.

What do people do when it rains? They come to the library. When they come to the library they notice the wicked cool programs that are happening and they get involved! Now I have 4 kids that love Storybirds so much that they can't get enough...they're coming back next week. Though I love to see the sunshine, today I loved the rain.

What have I done to be helpful?

I just had my first real one-on-one with a very nice lady. She came in last week and saw my ASK ME sign so she did just that. She had finally got yahoo mail down and is now moving on to sending pictures but did not know how. I showed her how today when she brought in her camera. Then I got her set up on Facebook so she can connect with her sisters and daughter. She was so happy for the help and is going to keep coming back until she masters the computer programs that her family use.

Helping people get connected - (to steal McD's slogan) - I'm lovin it!

What have I done to be helpful?

Last Thursday I had a one-on-one tutorial with a lady who "just wanted to learn more." She did not come in with any specific requests but was open to learn whatever I thought might be useful. I taught her a few things about using E-mail and how to empty your Recycle Bin, but what I think she was most excited about was learning how to "Tag" pictures on Facebook! We tagged a few pictures of her cats and family. She seemed very excited to be doing this. I had a lot of fun working with her and she is coming back next week! It always feel nice to know you have made someone else happy.

What have I done to be helpful?

yesterday a lady came in not really knowing how to use a computer and wanted help doing her taxes online so I helped her log into the computer open a browser ,It took us a few tries to find the actual site that we had to use, This was my first time doing something like this, Eventually we found the right page and she started inputting her information. we ran into a few problems with putting o in instead of 0 but the friendly error messages helped us out. And after 30 minutes or so we finally got it all done and sent off, She was very grateful of my help and asked for my name and said she would be back if she needed anymore help.

What have I done today to be helpful?

Yesterday I had a one-on-one computer tutorial with the same lady who came last week. I had helped her put an ad on kijiji to sell her car. This week she came back and told me that she had sold her car. So this week her goal was to take the pictures off her camera and put them on her computer. She wanted to be able to use the pictures in her screen saver and also put a picture on a kijiji ad. We put one ad on yesterday and she will be back next week with more pictures!

Hi everyone:

Jasmine just asked me about the screen capture program that I had mentioned at Orientation. It's a free program and available at the following website: http://www.screencapturer.com/

Have fun with it! It's really easy to use and I like the fact that I can select a very small portion of the screen using the region feature.

Poster Attempt

My attempt at making a poster not something i'm all that good at.

Have I done something positive about someone to their face?

Today an older lady stopped in and needed help getting into her email account.
She had explained to me that she has not been on in a long time (last summer).
So we both open up Gmail and she types in her user name and password very slowly.
The computer showed wrong username or password in red written, she became upset that it wasn't working. I asked are you sure this is the correct username or password? She tells me yes its the same as it was last year. A couple minutes had gone by and her husband came in to use a computer also. I asked him If he knew about the username or password. He had a puzzled look then he reached into his pocket to grab out his wallet. Inside the wallet was a folded piece of paper With the username and password on it of his wife's email account. She forgot a word. Latter I had said the couple you are very smart keeping your password and username with you. Now she can access her account anytime and If she forgets again her husband has the piece of paper from last year in his wallet. The cutest thing is she only wanted to open her email to see her new born grandson photos sent by her son. Her only contact.

What have I done today to be helpful?

Today I had a meeting with a young girl and her mother. This young girl has down's syndrome and was very nervous about registering for one of the animation classes. After talking with her and her mother for ten minutes the girl seemed very excited for the class. When she first saw me she was very shy, and to answer any questions she would nod or shake her head no. However when she was leaving I said, "I hope your excited for tomorrow!"
She then looked right at me with a great big smile and said, "Yeah!"
I guess the reason this was helpful is because being nervous can be one of the scariest things to overcome, but by talking to this girl I think her nervousness went from a 10 to a 5.

What Have I done to be good to myself?

I figured I should do one of these as well. For this I have to say working with horses. I have recently started work down at a horse barn in Port Williams, grooming, mucking out stalls, and feeding, as well as hauling hay and other various barn chores. The guy who owns the barn had broken his foot and needed help so I volunteered. It is what I look forward to everyday, other than coming to work for C@P!

What have I done today to make it more likely some ELSE will learn something?

Today I had informed my supervisor of the yellow arrows which I got on the orientation day. Maybe by the end of the day they will be put up above the cap site sign. It's hard to find the Kingsport c@p site unless you already know the area. This will be a great help to the tourist.

What have I done today to be helpful?

Today an older lady came into our C@P lab and wanted to know if it was possible to put all of her emails from a person in one place where she could access them easily. I quickly showed her how to create a folder in her email account and transfer emails into the folder. She was elated. She kept thanking me over and over again and said what a big help I was. Although it only took a few minutes to help her out, I know I made her day, which was a great feeling.

Do you beleive in UFO's?

Please leave answer in comments.

Watch this really good documentary a few weeks ago called UFO's The Greatest Story ever Denied (link to part one below). Was wondering what other people thought about this. Personal I found the documentary very convincing on some points and was fun to watch. Can't wait to hear what other people think about this.

How I helped someone today

Two older ladies dropped into the C@P site lost and in need of help. I was able to go on Google Maps and find the place they were look for ( not far away) which made them very happy. I will just quote what they wrote for C@P. "Stopped in lost and staff found address we were looking for on Google Maps and helped direct is to our destination."

What have I done today to be good to myself?

Yesterday was the first day in quite some time that I had a chance to do something different from my regular routine of working, studying and barn chores. I went out to get ice cream with a friend who I had not seen since Christmas time. We ended up talking for hours outside of the ice cream place! It was very nice to be able to get out and have an ice cream and see my friend!

What have I done today to make it more likely someone ELSE will learn something?

Yesterday I had an "ask me" sign while I was doing preparation for programs. So far it has been helpful as I assisted someone to get onto the Internet. We struggled for a while until we realized that the wireless had gone down. Once it was reset he was quickly online! I really love the idea of the "ask me" sign because it is a great way to be helpful all day!

What have I done today to make it more likely I will learn something?

Yesterday I asked a lot of questions because on Monday my laptop was having some problems so it had to be sent to technology support. So when I went to use my memory stick yesterday there was these very odd looking files so the virus got to some of my files on the memory stick. So my supervisor talked to technology support about this (I was running a Kids' Camp) and asked the questions I had asked her. It was advised that I reformat my memory stick. Even though I lost a small amount of my work I allowed myself to learn by asking a lot of questions. I now know that if I ever see something on my screen like that again that I need to shut down the computer immediately. Asking questions is a great way to work through problems!

What have I done today to be helpful?

On Monday I had my first one-on-one tutorial it was great to be able to help! The lady came with her laptop and a wish list of what she wanted to learn. We worked away at the list and since I did not have another tutorial booked after I spent some extra time with her. We completed a lot of her wish list and she will be back next week for another tutorial. I am looking forward to the rest of the summer and more one-on-one tutorials!

What have I done today to be helpful?

Last Thursday Afternoon an older lady came in to VANSDA and told me her laptop was completely broken and she didn't know what to do. So I told her I'd see what I could do. Turns out she has had the laptop for a year, but has never once done an update. So while she was on her computer the night before it had just shut down on her. So we charged it up, and installed the updates. She had no idea what an "update" was. So I briefly explained to her where her updates were, and showed her how to go in and set them up automatically. She came into my office and sat down with me and we had a nice conversation about technology and computers. She told me she's always really been against it because she feels technology is taking away from the personal relationships people have (face to face). I told her that I agree on some levels, but that it is also connecting people all over the world! She told me the only thing she knows how to do on her computer is turn it off and on, go to the internet, and check her e-mails.
This lady is coming back on Thursday afternoon for a one on one tutorial with me on basic computer knowledge =)
