Windsor Success Story

Hi Everyone,

Some time ago I had a patron at the library who had purchased a tablet just a few days prior. While he knew how to turn it on, and had been using the camera, he had done little more. He mentioned that apps had been "disappearing" from the device, and by the time he brought it in there was little more than chrome on the device. Naturally he was quite confused, but we began work on the tablet.

We got the apps back that had "disappeared", set up e-mail, and moved into the play store. The next few sessions his wife tagged along as well, and slowly and surely we began to set up a "personalized tablet". They booked sessions in both Windsor and Hantsport (which I move between) and we investigated, toyed, and discussed. They were very gracious for my assistance and kept coming back for more.

It was a great success... while it lasted.

One day he came for a regular one on one session, but the tablet wouldn't power on. We ran through normal troubleshooting, save for removing the case, but the device wouldn't start. It was dead [, Jim]. After all the work we put into it, he was understandably disappointed; the 1 in 100, 000 that stop working... what are the odds!

We spent that session evoking the warranty, as the device wasn't over a month old! We were successful, and it is now being fixed / replaced overseas.

In the end however, the hardware doesn't really matter. It was the journey and the learning experience that marked the success. The sessions taught them where to look on the device, how it operated and how it worked. The skills are transferable to their desktop, and will come in handy for the replacement tablet.

I suppose if there's one good thing to come from hardware failure it's that we can start the process all over again!

I really enjoyed working with these patrons, as it was learning experience for them, as well as me. I was learning the ins and outs of the tablet as we went along, but I passed on my knowledge of "knowing where to look" and "that looks promising." They learned, I learned and everyone was happy in the end (even though the tablet met an unfortunate fate). Like I said before, the fun part is that we'll be doing it all again!
