Over the last
couple of weeks, a women has been coming in to help get acclimatized to Mac OS
after previously using Windows.
On our first
tutorial, she had said that she had felt a bit overwhelmed with the conversion,
and was now unsure of how to do even the basics. I showed her many of the features
that she had been missing out on, and I think that she quickly realized that
there was much more depth to her computer’s abilities than she originally thought.
After just a
few lessons she has seemed much more confident in her abilities. Together we
have set up Digital Editions for her e-reader, processed Pages, and did some
basic picture editing with iPhoto.
Yesterday,
after an extremely stressful week for her, we decided to explore the App store,
something she had never done before. She decided to download Sketch Up Express
(a free drawing tool), and quickly her “week was made” by all of the exciting
drawing possibilities.
Following the
tutorial she was extremely thankful for all of my help and for facilitating her
exploration. She said that all the things that she learned and discovered in
the tutorial helped her to get her mind off of the week’s strain, something I
was glad to be able to offer.
Altogether,
working with this woman has been a very rewarding experience; it has helped me
appreciate the technology we use for just how inspiring and liberating it can
be.
